7pm: 'Talk it to Death' Dying Matters Awareness Week Edition, Leeds
In our society, we don’t talk about death enough, yet it’s something that touches us all, and something we will all experience for ourselves, at some point. I truly believe that getting comfortable talking about death, will leave us better armed to deal with it when the time comes. Hopefully this will leave us informed of our choices, and will reduce unnecessary trauma for ourselves and our loved ones.
‘Talk it to Death’ is a safe space to join with others to discuss and reflect on death, dying and related subjects. In this group, you will be invited (without pressure) to share your stories and experiences, and to respectfully and non judgementally witness the stories of others. Together, I hope we can start to build a society that no longer fears death, but embraces it as part of life. *This group is not a substitute for bereavement support. If you are in the heavy depths of grief, you will be held and heard, but I would highly recommend seeking more relevant and appropriate support. As an end of life doula, Anna supports people who are dying, their family and friends and sometimes, people experiencing bereavement. Her aim is to help people live as good a life as possible right up until the very end. As a funeral director, Louise has an unconventional approach. She created Poetic Endings, the kind of funeral service she felt needed to exist. Her mission is to get people to really think about the kind of funerals they’re having, and why they have them. Together, Anna and Louise are the team behind Life. Death. Whatever. Their joint mission is to redesign the dialogue around death and dying, to open it up and to find new approaches to this important subject. They believe that death is a normal part of life and dying is part of living. Acknowledging and accepting that one day we will die is fundamental to living a full life. It’s as simple and as complicated as that.
Anna and Louise will be reading from their book and joining in a discussion with BrumYODO at The Heath Bookshop in Kings Heath. Tickets are free but booking is essential. Address: The Heath Bookshop, (Kings Court (opposite Asda), R/O94 High Street, Kings Heath, Birmingham B14 7JZ. Further info & booking.

2pm: Meet the Author - Hollie Starling, Kings Heath, Birmingham
Author of The Bleeding Tree, Hollie Starling will be sharing an excerpt from her book and will join in a discussion The Heath Bookshop owners Claire Dawes and Catherine Gale.
The Bleeding Tree is an unflinching year-one guidebook to grief that shows us that by looking back to past traditions of bereavement we can all find our own way forward. One of the hardest feelings to cope with when grieving is feeling loneliness in your loss. The Bleeding Tree is a beautiful reminder that no matter how lonely we feel in our grief, we are not alone. By weaving her own experiences of grief with ancient rituals and folk tales Hollie reminds us that grief is ancient and universal and approaches the subject with a fresh narrative voice and dark humour.
Hollie Starling is a writer and folklorist from the North East of England whose essays have appeared in Folklore for Resistance, Horrified magazine, the journal of The London Horror Society and Lincolnshire Strange Delights. Hollie currently works in the libraries of a national museum. Her page Folk Horror Magpie (@folkhorrormagpie) has over 30k followers across Instagram and Twitter. The Bleeding Tree is her first book. This event at The Heath Bookshop in Kings Heath is free but places need to be booked. Address: The Heath Bookshop, (Kings Court (opposite Asda), R/O94 High Street, Kings Heath, Birmingham B14 7JZ. These poems display the poise and precision of a poet already at the height of her powers, writing the un-writable, weaving the terrible into something relatable and filled with the light of understanding. Helen will be in discussion with BrumYODO at The Heath Bookshop in Kings Heath. The event is free but booking is essential. The title of the conference is “Linking up Norfolk, with the end in mind". ‘Communities are prepared to help’ is ambition 6 of the national guidance document for end of life care. Hospital teams can participate in this approach, making best use of the enormous resource of community support, which is in keeping with principles of good care and efficient patient flow. In Norfolk we have a wealth of community support and services, and many interesting projects on integrating healthcare and community support for patients and carers. Many health professionals are not aware of these resources and the conferences amazing speakers will shine the light on these essential resources and enable us to work towards integration and building our own compassionate communities in Norfolk. This years dying matters theme is focussed on talking about death, dying and grief in the work place. The work place community is one of the largest as we spend nearly a third of our lives at work. 57% of employees will have experienced a bereavement in the last five years and every day, more than 600 people quit work to look after older and disabled relatives. Therefore building workplace communities is essential, especially in heath care. We want to create an open and compassionate society at work where we are comfortable facing the realities of dying, death and grief in our own workplace. The NNUH has a wealth of support systems and the panel with our expert speakers will highlight these and discuss how workplaces and staff can support each other, those who are ill, who are caring for those around them, or who have experienced loss, a death of a family member or friend. It's so exciting to be hosting this event, so many expert and passionate speakers, so please have a look at the programme and book your slot before its all sold out! 1st - 8th May
10am: Good Grief Weston, venues across Weston-super-Mare
Good Grief Weston is a new festival that aims to open up conversations around death and bereavement. Death, like birth, is one of the few universally shared experiences, yet many of us feel scared to face mortality, struggle with grief alone, or worry about how to support bereaved friends and family.
Our creative and diverse festival will give that elephant in the room a friendly prod! Through a range of workshops, performances and other grassroot community activities, we will talk openly and honestly about death and loss – sometimes with humour, always with compassion.
Over the week, the festival will spotlight the wonderful organisations and groups already doing great work in Weston – and help kickstart a few more (from a synchronised swimming squad to a men’s cooking club!). We hope these events will stimulate different ways of thinking and provide opportunities for conversation and community spirit that will last through the festival and beyond. More information about this event.
